Artsakh photographer tells the story behind photo of Ruben Vardanyan

David Kagramanyan recalls how he photographed social entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan, who was working in the destroyed monastery complex of Hakobavank. The philanthropist considered the restoration of this holy place a symbol of revival in Artsakh.

“[Over 9 months] we did not manage to complete the restoration, we only finished the initial clearing, in which Vardanyan participated personally — he helped clean the territory with his own hands. I only distributed this particular photo; I keep the rest because he was very sweaty in the pictures. He worked harder than the workers, and this sweat, visibly apparent, is extremely telling. He was equal with everyone, he not only gave us advice, but asked us for advice as well; young people associated so many hopes with him,” Kagramanyan said.
