French Foreign Ministry: "Azerbaijan must finally release Armenian prisoners"

At a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barraud stated that he was extremely concerned about the state of affairs on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

“I hope that the European mission deployed on the ground can be strengthened to effectively monitor the situation and contain these tensions. A peace treaty must finally be signed, and arbitrarily detained persons and prisoners must be released,” added Jean-Noel Barraud.

Lawyer Siranush Sahakyan shared her impressions about the trial of Ruben Vardanyan and other ex-leaders of Artsakh

According to Siranush Sahakyan, the defender of the interests of Armenian prisoners of war at the ECHR, systematic gross violations of international norms turn these hearings into a mockery. As a result, the testimonies of the Armenian prisoners have to be judged only on the basis of Azerbaijani media reports, which makes it impossible to draw an objective picture of what is happening. The only alternative information we can get is from Ruben Vardanyan, who is trying to pass it on by any means, as well as through his private lawyer.

In addition, Sahakyan criticized the testimonies of Azerbaijani witnesses: they claim that they were injured during the hostilities and demand the maximum sentence for Ruben Vardanyan, although they do not even know him.

“For all serious specialists, all of this is not only unreliable, but also ridiculous,” the lawyer emphasized.

According to Sahakyan, the international community keeps following the process. If all attempts to influence Baku fail, it will be necessary to apply sanctions to Azerbaijan, she believes.

“In any case, we will continue our work with all international structures and we will show the formal, senseless and anti-legal nature of this trial”, Sahakyan adds.

Rasmus Canbäck: "The trials of Ruben and other ex-Nagorno-Karabakh leaders serve a dual purpose"

Rasmus Canbäck, a Swedish social anthropologist and expert on the Karabakh conflict, has written an article on Armenian political prisoners in Azerbaijan. In The Insider matter, the author focuses on Ruben Vardanian, who endured a 23-day hunger strike to protest the fictitious trial.

In the expert’s opinion, repressions against Ruben Vardanyan and other former leaders of Artsakh simultaneously destabilize the situation inside Armenia and additionally turn Azerbaijani society against Yerevan.

“Whereas Baku previously exerted constant pressure on Nagorno-Karabakh, the trials now serve the same dual purpose: the Azerbaijani public cohesion against a supposed external enemy and pressuring on Armenia,” Canbäck concludes.

David Vardanian: "Baku is using my father's image to frighten Armenians"

In an interview with the French publication Le Spectacle du Monde, Ruben Vardanyan’s eldest son David described the conditions in which his father is kept, how his father is contacted and why the trial resembles the Theatre of the Absurd. David stated that the videotaped arrest of his father in September 2023 is part of Azerbaijan’s strategy against the entire Armenian nation.

“Baku is using my father’s image and his authority to send a message to the world. Unfortunately, we can say that they succeed in some respects,” David noted.

Also Ruben Vardanyan’s son answered the question about what can contribute to the release of his father and other Armenian prisoners. He attributes hope for their return home to groundswell and pressure on Azerbaijan from Western governments.

The businessman hopes for the fulfillment of these demands after the recent statement of the US President's National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. The latter called on Armenia and Azerbaijan for peace and the release of prisoners.

Nubar Afeyan: Real peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan is possible only if all Armenian prisoners are released

“There is an intrinsic link between justice and real sustainable peace. Armenia and Azerbaijan will not follow the path of peace until justice prevails – the release of my friend Ruben Vardanyan and other prisoners”, Afeyan wrote on his page on X.

The businessman hopes for the fulfillment of these demands after the recent statement of the US President’s National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. The latter called on Armenia and Azerbaijan for peace and the release of prisoners.

“The conflict in the South Caucasus must end. This week I spoke with Azerbaijani President Aliyev’s National Security Advisor Hikmet Hajiyev. We are glad that Azerbaijan and Armenia have taken a big step forward and agreed to conclude a peace treaty”, Waltz said in his address.

Ruben Vardanyan's statements from the detention center and his hunger strike influenced the adoption of the resolution by the European Parliament

Advocate of Armenian interests in the ECHR, lawyer Siranush Sahakyan spoke on the topic of political prisoners in Baku, including famous philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan.

“Both Vardanyan and all other political prisoners have the same conditions of detention, it’s just that he uses the phone calls he is entitled to with his family to convey his messages,” Sahakyan said.

According to her, Ruben Vardanyan uses even the slightest opportunity to speak out about procedural violations in Baku court. The social entrepreneur is trying to draw international attention to the illegal trial.

«”As far as I understand, it is already of secondary importance to him how he will be treated there. He thinks it is important to publicize the problem by all possible means and for this purpose he even turns to life-threatening means – hunger strike”, Sahakyan shared her opinion.

The human rights activist noted that Ruben Vardanyan’s statements from the detention center, as well as his photos during the hunger strike and his exhausted appearance influenced the adoption of the resolution of the European Parliament. Human rights activists from Amnesty International reacted to earlier statements.

“His statement made before the start of the trial, on January 16, was extremely important when he stated that the protocols and documents were falsified and he did not give any testimony. By doing so, he sent an alarming signal about the illegal nature of the whole process, not only in his own regard, but also with regard to other Armenians. Let us not forget that Amnesty International immediately reacted to this. Vardanyan’s statement was an opportunity for us, international human rights activists, to use it competently to raise the issues of the release of prisoners and lawlessness committed by Azerbaijan in general”, Sahakyan summarized.

Dmitri Yusov, Executive Director of the MGIMO Development Fund

“When Ruben became the state minister of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), many people asked me, out of habit, why he did it.

I understood that he could not have acted differently so that he could tell himself in the future that he had done his best.

So I also cannot help but write a few lines to attract attention.

In politics, alas, there are no friends, there are only interests, and I see that nobody is interested in Ruben now, and that makes me very sad and hurt. If you type ‘Ruben Vardanyan hunger strike’ into Google in English, it will be Russian or Armenian sources, nothing in the world press, only on page three there is Reuters, and it is news about last year’s hunger strike.

There is media coverage — there is a person. No media coverage — no person.

We met Ruben during my enrollment at Skolkovo in the spring of 2010, we saw each other regularly in 2010–2011, and after Skolkovo I was on Ruben’s team in 2012–2013. I thought that after graduation I would go into strategy consulting (I had interviews at McKinsey, BCG, Bain etc.), but I finally decided that I wanted to work with Ruben. It is impossible to do one thing with Ruben. In addition to the integration of Troika and Sberbank, I was involved in the Skolkovo endowment, evaluated Ruben’s personal investment projects with my team, was at times an alternate director in Ruben’s place, Ruben and I regularly went to fundraising meetings on Skolkovo and the school under construction in Dilijan, and much more.

I remember some cases that I would like to share.

We were driving across India from Mysore to Bangalore. On the highway, Ruben offered to have lunch, and we went to a regular café on the highway, Ruben invited the cab driver to join us at the table.

In May 2013, we flew to Armenia, a school was under construction in Dilijan. I was also present at Ruben’s meeting with the Armenian project team. I watched and thought that Ruben is a man of world scale. Ruben said that we as Armenians have been preserved through language and faith, and now not only Armenia, but the world in general needs the human and moral qualities and vision for the development of the country/region/world for decades to come that Ruben has.

Ruben has helped so many people/organizations around the world, I wish someone would help Ruben in return now.”

Musheg Syuni, public figure

“When I see Ruben Vardanyan’s condition in Baku captivity, at this trial, the first sensations are helplessness replaced by rage…..

Then gradually I remember the last meeting with Ruben Vardanyan in Moscow before his departure first to Armenia and later to Artsakh, and I get goosebumps.

At this meeting with representatives of the diaspora, Ruben Vardanyan, discussing what kind of leader Armenia needs now, said: “Today we do not need a leader who will lead the crowd, but we need someone who can sacrifice himself and his personal ambitions for the sake of the interests of the state and the nation.”

At that time, I didn’t quite understand what it meant….

And now I see a man who is outwardly exhausted, but so strong in spirit, who did what he told us earlier, he literally sacrificed himself, although he could have lived for his own pleasure.

But will his sacrifice be appreciated by the Armenian people? Whether his sacrifice will become a new symbol of the struggle for our people’s freedom and right to their own land, I don’t know….

In the future, we do not have even the slightest right to allow our citizens, our leaders of any level to be captured and judged by our enemy, it is time to end the lethargic sleep and helplessness!!!”

Aram Pakhchanian, curator and lecturer of the Management and Leadership in Education program at the School of Education, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ayb Educational Foundation

“Many people write about Ruben Vardanyan. I can’t write anything: Ruben is my childhood friend, he is a dear and close person to me. All this torments me terribly, I can’t forgive myself that I don’t know how to help him except to pray. At the same time, I admire Ruben — his heroism, his resilience, his strength.

That’s all.”

Rem Darbinyan, business angel, investor in more than 60 startups

“…I thought about Ruben Vardanyan, who is now in an Azerbaijan prison, being subjected to an unfair trial and torture. About a man who chose to be with his people at the most difficult moment, but whom many have already forgotten. We often talk about national unity, but when the time comes to act, we remain indifferent to the suffering of our brothers and sisters.

And I realized something important: I am proud to have a friend who not only remembers me with kindness when I am not around, but also stands firmly for the rights of Armenians. But at the same time, it saddens me that we as a nation often fail to appreciate those compatriots who dedicate their lives to our future.

Ruben, no matter where you are or what circumstances you are facing, I want you to know that as a friend, I am with you. May you have the strength to know that you are not alone and that your bravery continues to inspire us all.”

Aida Vardanyan, coach, psychologist

“Look at the photo of Ruben Vardanyan taken during the last session of the Baku trial and farce. Look at his face, full of dignity, strength, profound peace and wisdom. For the likes of Aliyev and Pashinyan, this inner strength of Ruben is the most intolerable thing. There is no way they can influence him and his will with the usual threats, blackmail, manipulation, aggression, torture, and the loss of influence and control is their worst nightmare. I’m sure deep in their psyche they are torn apart by rage and inability to break Ruben — such is the underlying psychic dynamic in those who have chosen power and force as their primary survival mechanism.

Ruben-jan, I know that in your will, in your spiritual, moral, ethical strength you are an unshakable rock. Just hold on physically. We are fighting our hardest for you and will continue to do so no matter what.

Astghik Keshishyan, teacher of the “Teach, Armenia” program

“When I lived in Artsakh, the most frustrating thing for me was that with almost every new acquaintance I had to explain why I came here. At first I even cried, realizing that throwing yourself into any difficulties just because you love your country madly is not really perceived as something natural and normal.

In July, we met Ruben Vardanyan in Kolatak — he came to Akobavank. I looked at him and thought: “I wonder why he really came here? What has he lost here?” And you, what have you lost? It hurts you when you left your wonderful family and normal life for a blockade, and a lot of people don’t understand your motives even after two years. And what to say about him, who left billions, an incredibly important and meaningful life, does an incomparably larger cause, but even you look for ulterior motives in his actions. At what point did it become so difficult and unnatural for us to believe simple things?

Ruben’s message was hard. A lesson in dignity and spiritual strength. You can spend a long time thinking about each paragraph. I’m thinking about this:

“I am a person who wants to live, love and continue my activities. But I believe that what I am doing is right, because it is the only way to bring you out of indifference”.

There’s probably nothing we can do for Ruben himself. It remains to be seen whether we can do something for ourselves to get out of this indifference.

UWC Dilijan International Boarding School

“UWC Dilijan co-founder Ruben Vardanyan calls for true and lasting peace in an audio message from a Baku prison. His vision of fostering peace through education inspired him and his wife Veronica Zonabend, who co-founded the school, to create UWC Dilijan more than 10 years ago. Their commitment to peace is deeply aligned with UWC’s mission to make education a force that unites people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.”

Anton Vert, business blogger

“One day at a conference, I asked.

Even then I was scared. Of course. Me and him, he’s a billionaire! Ugh…

But I asked. In person. And Ruben Vardanyan answered me. He told me when my business was a total failure. I was young and stupid, I didn’t know, I was searching. I wanted changes. Otherwise, failure.

He answered very simply, calmly and matter-of-factly. He said: believe (that’s the main thing), be afraid (that’s normal), do (that’s important) and, most importantly, be responsible for your achievements in word and deed (he then jumped with a parachute, having reached another goal, wildly afraid of heights).

It was 2013, the year of changes, the year of faith, the year when I radically changed the direction of my business. Ruben was (and is) able to say things like no one else. He will never criticize. He will never say you’re wrong. He will never be a judge. He will never get in the way. He is just there. He is here. He’s a mentor, he’s something that gets to the root of things. He’s not evil, he’s not kind, he’s just over.

And what is happening now… It’s painful, it’s scary, it’s… Now I’m very scared about what will happen to him. There’s no leverage right now. Right now I just want him to be safe, with his family, and not there.

But there is faith. It’s been that kind of year. Faith is strong. It’s here, it’s with us. And Ruben will be with us. There’s more to come. So be it. Otherwise, what’s it all for?”

Violet Grigorian, Armenian poetess

“From ‘Wings of Tatev’, the International School and ‘Aurora’ to the hotel complex in Dilijan, which, while preserving the local traditional look, has breathed modern tourist life into the town — all of Ruben Vardanyan’s initiatives have been of high quality, worthy and useful for Armenia.

This man invested his millions, convinced others to invest, attracted the best specialists, and now he gave his life for Armenia, for Armenians, for development, for dignity. And Armenia and Armenians today are not doing even a tenth of what it takes to save him from Turkish torture and humiliation.

Such things do not pass without a trace. They condemn future generations to an inferiority complex. For the children of today, being Armenian and having a connection to Armenia will be shameful — no matter what alibis their parents come up with to justify their inaction while they were waiting for the “rescue bus” at the “peace” bus stop instead of demanding that the authorities act to release the captives.”

Tatev Hayrapetyan, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Expert on Azerbaijan

“Ruben Vardanyan, if you knew how many kind and sincere people are thinking about you these days, worrying, praying, writing… They don’t just write statuses — they put their whole soul into them, remembering in detail what you have done for Armenia and Artsakh, talking about your choice, your firm will to remain Armenian and be faithful to it until the end.

How I wish that energy would somehow miraculously give you strength, and you would overcome this ordeal. Honestly, I don’t have many words… I just know that you made a very difficult decision — and you did it not only for your own dignity, but also for the defense of the Republic of Armenia. May your struggle succeed, may the door to freedom open…”

Elena Baghdasaryan, Head of the Road of Life Charitable Foundation

“I’ll tell you about one amazing story that I witnessed. I will tell you about what became my role model and the starting point for my own subsequent activity as its essence, basis and foundation.

Hardly anyone knows about it, I am sure there were many such stories of saving lives and true non-public charity in Ruben Vardanyan’s life….

It happened in the early 2000s, my sister’s neighbor was Ruben Vardanyan’s schoolteacher.

Her little grandson had a severe form of diabetes.

Ruben not only helped with expensive and long-term treatment, got the child’s mother a job, but also, having bought this family an apartment in Moscow, completely shielded them from household problems.

A few years later, the child’s grandmother called my sister in hysterics: her daughter was in intensive care in critical condition.

While my sister was rushing to the hospital to talk to the doctors, her neighbor, who is also the grandmother of the saved grandson, who is also the mother of the daughter dying in intensive care, who is also Ruben Vardanyan’s school teacher, was trying to find him, calling all the known phone numbers.

It turned out that the young woman’s liver had failed as a result of a sluggish long-term disease, and a transplant was urgently needed.

The time was limited to a day, two days at most.

Do you know what it is to find a donor liver in Moscow in one day?

Ruben responded, reacted reactively, helped and solved the issue immediately, instantly, fundamentally.

The liver was found overnight, the woman was transferred to the Institute of Transplantology, the operation was successful, and she is still alive and well.

But we are not Ruben, we do not act in time and promptly, we can only grumble and watch.

Resent and lose.

Without drawing conclusions, we can only watch on.

And constantly lamenting, we can sprinkle our heads with ashes.”

Aza Babayan, journalist

“Ruben Vardanyan was first on the list of those I planned to interview when I moved to Moscow in 2004 to live, work and look after the health of my son, who was young at the time.

It was both my desire to get to know a businessman who was unusual by Moscow standards, and an editorial assignment.

I had neither common acquaintances with Ruben nor his phone number. But I found in the Moscow news announcement a conference where he was supposed to speak, and I went there.

He was the most accessible to journalists of all Russian businessmen.

The first time we met, we talked for over an hour and agreed to become friends.

The first time we met, I was surprised by his enthusiasm.

He would throw himself into any project he did and infect everyone around him with his ideas.

This is how the school in Dilijan was built, this is how Wings of Tatev was built, this is how he created Aurora. “It’s time for us to stop expecting mercy from the world. It’s time for us to give this mercy.”

And Ruben is also a very plain man. One day, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan was supposed to speak at the Armenian Embassy in Moscow. The solemn hall of the Embassy was ready, all the seats in the hall were occupied, the Prime Minister did not start his speech: they were waiting for Ruben Vardanyan. He was a little late and was escorted to his front row seat. Ruben sat down and the Prime Minister began to speak. And Ruben suddenly saw me standing by the aisle. All the seats in the audience were taken. And he stood up, came up to me and offered me his seat. Of course, I didn’t sit down. And so we stood together and listened to the Prime Minister, who wanted to convince those gathered that everything in Armenia is not as bad as the press writes…

One day, just a couple months after the 2018 revolution, I asked Ruben what was bothering him so much. His answer stunned me. I don’t remember the exact words, but the meaning was as follows: I have the impression that they are “squeezing” our Motherland out of us, doing everything to make us stop loving it. It won’t work, of course, but the process itself is very nasty and painful.

Ruben-jan, please hold on. You have no idea how much we need you! Hold on, please!”

Argentinean public activists demand the release of Ruben Vardanyan

The Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief (SOAR) condemned the unjust imprisonment of a well-known philanthropist, following human rights activist Seda Ghulam Fatima.

SOAR’s Buenos Aires office issued a statement on the unjust imprisonment of Ruben Vardanyan in Baku. The public organization demands the immediate release of the famous philanthropist. The document is issued in solidarity with Pakistani human rights activist Seda Ghulam Fatima, who recently announced that she is going to the court hearing on Vardanyan’s case.

«“The SOAR Buenos Aires Chapter expresses its deep concern over the arbitrary detention of Rubén Vardanyan and other political prisoners in Azerbaijan. We call on the international community and human rights organizations to take immediate action to ensure a fair trial and the release of those detained without due process,” the statement said.

Public activists note that Ruben has fought for human rights, justice and peace throughout his career. SOAR representatives called his imprisonment “an attack on all those who work on behalf of oppressed people”.

“We urge the International Red Cross, the United Nations, the European Parliament, and other human rights organizations to intervene in this situation and ensure that Rubén Vardanyan receives dignified treatment and a fair trial. SOAR will remain steadfast in its support for Rubén Vardanyan and all those unjustly deprived of their freedom. We will continue to denounce these human rights violations and work tirelessly for justice and truth,” the document said.

SOAR representatives emphasize that the charges against Vardanyan were fabricated. Numerous international organizations have also condemned Ruben’s trial and are demanding his release.

Famous physician and humanitarian Tom Catena has released a video message in support of Ruben

Tom Catena, chief physician at Sudan’s Mother of Mercy Hospital and winner of the Aurora Humanitarian Award, has called on the international community to demand the release of Ruben and other Armenian prisoners.

“With this short video I express my support for my friend Ruben Vardanyan, who has been unjustly held in an Azerbaijani prison for over a year now. I have known Ruben since 2017, when he was awarded the international Aurora Humanitarian Award for his work in Sudan that year,” said Catena.

He spoke about his acquaintance with the philanthropist and emphasized that the charges against him have no grounds.

«“Being also the chair of the Aurora Humanitarian Award initiative, I have managed to get to know Ruben quite well over the years. We traveled together quite often for the purpose of other projects. I know Ruben as an exceptionally fair, exceptionally honest person. And anyone who knows Ruben knows that all those accusations that he is facing are absolutely false and ridiculous. Ruben went to Artsakh to help the government and the population, even very well aware of all the risks involved in going there, and despite this, he decided to go. I call on the international community, I call on all people of goodwill to demand the release of both Ruben and all Armenian prisoners who are unjustly held in an Azerbaijani prison,” Catena said.

The power of kindness: a story that changed me

I want to say a few words. Wishing you a good moment, because only the present moment is real and closest to eternity.

Today, I want to share with you a very personal story that played a huge role in shaping me as a person. It happened to me in Azerbaijan almost 39 years ago.

Like all young men in the Soviet Union who turned 18, even if they were students, I was drafted into the Soviet Army. After finishing my first year at Moscow State University, at the end of June, after completing my exams, I found myself at the Moscow draft station. After a long journey, in early July, a few hundred of us ended up in Balajary, a suburb of Baku. That was the first and only time I was in the Azerbaijani SSR. It was a distribution point.

A sergeant approached me and offered to arrange for me to serve in Armenia for 300 rubles. That was a lot of money at the time, and I told him I didn’t have that amount. Three days later, when we were about to be assigned to our final military units, he came back and said, “Alright, at least give me 50 rubles,” apparently unable to find anyone else to pay. I told him I only had 27 rubles. He walked away displeased, saying it was impossible.

I shared this story with some guys I had met during our long journey from Moscow to Baku – just as an amusing episode. Suddenly, 15 minutes later, six or seven of them came up to me, having discussed it among themselves, and handed me 23 rubles. They said they wanted me to be able to serve at home and that it would make them happy. They smiled.

I knew they were giving me their last money – their savings for cigarettes – because they weren’t from wealthy families, and three or five rubles was a significant amount for them. Thanks to these almost strangers – only one of whom I vaguely knew from university – who were of a different nationality, who owed me nothing, I was able to go to Armenia and serve for two years in Leninakan.

I have thought about this episode many times in my life and asked myself three questions. Am I willing to give away my last money or last piece of bread to help someone else? Not a million from a billion, but truly the last that I have. Second, can I feel genuine happiness knowing that someone else, because of me, will get to serve at home while I stay behind in an unfamiliar place, longing for my homeland, my loved ones, whom I may not see for two years? And third, am I prepared to expect nothing in return, to not even wait for gratitude? We didn’t even exchange addresses.

This story became one of my foundational life lessons, shaping me into who I am today.

First, today, I want to express my deepest gratitude to them, not knowing whether they are still alive or how their lives turned out. But if they hear my story, they should know that I always remember those 23 rubles, the kindness they showed me with no expectation of anything in return, and I will never forget it. Second, I want you to know that, because of them, I understood that doing good is not an investment – it’s simply something you do. You pass it on like a relay baton, just as others have done for you, and that in itself brings happiness. I am happy that my wife and I have given away nearly all our wealth to charity, and our children have understood and accepted this.

I asked Veronika to release this recording on a Sunday because, just as Saturday is sacred for Jews and Friday for Muslims, Sunday is a special day for all Christians. Find the strength within yourself, at least once a week, to take a break from the daily grind, the external noise, and routine problems. Take time to reflect on the eternal, the spiritual, no matter how difficult it may be. Have a conversation with yourself, alone, and with God.

I am convinced that goodness is eternal and immortal – it multiplies when done anonymously, without expecting anything in return. Many people, both familiar and unfamiliar to me, have shown me such kindness throughout my life, and I am deeply grateful to them. I have always tried to do the same, as much as I could.

Evil, on the other hand, is finite and mortal. That is why it is aggressive, spectacular, and draws so much attention. Evil grows stronger when we respond to it with more evil. Unfortunately, people find it easier to discuss and remember bad things rather than good ones – to gossip, to write books, to make films. Evil is diverse and attracts more attention, even in the news. We read more bad news than good.

But remember: if there were less goodness, light, and love than evil, the world would have ceased to exist long ago. Goodness, like the air around us, surrounds us invisibly, often taken for granted. By giving everything you have, know, and can do to others – without hoarding, without becoming a slave to the golden calf of material wealth, passions, and desires – I believe this is the true meaning of life, the question that so often troubles many of us. For in doing so, we expand goodness and light in the world for all.

We come into this world naked, and we leave it naked, taking nothing with us to the grave. Not even the pharaohs could escape this fate. Forgive, just as we want to be forgiven when we do wrong. Do not demand punishment for others while asking for mercy for yourself. Treat others as you wish to be treated. That is the golden rule. Do good and be happy. Peace to all of us. And may you have a blessed Sunday. I love you all.

Безумство ищет – глупость судит;

The hunger strike was not just a protest, but an attempt to draw attention to the injustice of the trial: Ruben Vardanyan suspends his hunger strike

«Today is March 12th, twenty-three days into my hunger strike. I am in good shape. Don’t worry, everything is fine. I understand what I am doing, why, and I am very grateful to everyone for their support and… concerns.

I want to address everyone and ask all of you — no matter how you feel about me — to listen to my message. I hope it will be short and clear. I am deliberately not mentioning any names — I do not want to attract attention to individuals.

I had several goals when I did this, when I declared my hunger strike: to show that there is no trial, but a farce; to show that it is not me who is being judged, but all Armenians and the state itself; and to show the price that had to be paid by all those who, in their hearts, would have been happy to stay and live here (in Artsakh), and not leave.

I want to remind you again of the Russian fairy tale about the choice between the loss of the horse — the Homeland, losing honor — the sword, and losing life, which stands at a crossroads. The hero is obliged to make a choice, because if he stays where he is, it will be certain death. And this choice is very difficult, but nevertheless it must be made by everyone, including those who once lived in Artsakh, when all that happened now, and before that, over the last thirty years, and before that, for millennia, happened.

Today’s court session is a vivid example of what would have happened if the people of Artsakh had stayed home, and what price you would have had to pay for it. Yesterday, during the trial, two Armenians from Artsakh, living in Stepanakert, testified against me, claiming various very incorrect things. And yet, they had never seen me in their lives, and they were in a very terrible state themselves, but nevertheless they appeared in court, and I felt very sorry for them.

Man pays for everything, and the example of the Armenian who was previously arrested in a Red Cross vehicle and sentenced to fifteen years, and the example of these two people, is an important visual warning to all of you that you would not have been allowed to live peacefully in your homes as it was. And anyone at any moment could have been in the place of yesterday’s two witnesses or accused of all the terrible crimes, and it would have had nothing to do with whether you were guilty or not, whether you committed these crimes or not.

I would like to say separately that I find it important that today, the former president is testifying here, while the legitimate president of Artsakh is in Armenia, and this, believe me, greatly changes the situation and the weight of the words being spoken here by the former president.

I am shocked by the depth of hatred that the current leadership of Armenia has for the Artsakh people, and I am glad that I prevented them from implementing their plan, which they pushed in every possible way and helped some Artsakh leaders, both current and former, to implement the scenario written by the other side, and wanted it to be realized so that they could have the right to say: “You see, your sons died because of them. And you accuse us of something else, but they sold out and will easily live a happy life now, while you will spend your life here bearing the grief of losing your loved ones”.

I want to address all the moral cripples who wanted this and took corresponding steps both in Armenia and in Artsakh, and those who now speak out about why they didn’t fight to the end but left, so that… they lost. And you failed to destroy the dignity and honor of ordinary Armenians. And not only Artsakh Armenians, but all Armenians.

For your information: during the period when the last military operation took place, the officially recognized number of casualties on the other side was four times higher than their losses during the same period in the 44-Day War. Eternal memory to all those who died for their Homeland.

I decided on the twenty-third day to suspend my hunger strike for many reasons, and I ask all those who have joined me to do so as well. I believe that the last court session helped to show you all very vividly and clearly what would have happened to you if you had stayed here, and what price you would have had to pay to live in your home, on your land. The second thing is to show that it is not a trial, but a farce, and another refusal of my legal rights to consider my petitions and my demands shows that there will be no trial here, that this show continues regardless of what is legal and illegal.

The statement made by the official representative of the authorities a few days ago showed everyone the obvious goal that it is not fifteen people plus one who are on trial, but the trial of the leadership of Armenia and Armenia as a whole as a state, of any Armenian — no matter where he is from, even if he is not from Armenia.

One last important thing. Whoever scares you with another military war is misleading you again. There are many other ways to lose the right to own your state in today’s world. It is not necessary to conquer it militarily again. The war is ongoing, but now it is possible to conquer without a single shot, using technology, finances, economic dependence, infrastructure, information control, and political warfare. If you continue to live in illusions… If you continue to live in illusions that everything will eventually end and you will be able to earn a living in peace and be happy… Hear me: this is self-deception.

After losing Artsakh, we will also lose Armenia in the coming years, if we do not radically change our attitude towards the concepts of elite, power, state, and who should lead us. Hear me and think about it before it is too late! And remember: always, as in the Armenian fairy tale, Kach Nazars (Nazar the Brave and those alike) were chosen as kings by the people, and it is our decision, not his. I am convinced that there are healthy forces in our nation and that we will overcome this difficult crisis, as we have done many times in our very long history, and we will not just live, but live with dignity in our Motherland. Remember that only the living can swim against the current.

I embrace all of you! Together with all of you, your one of your ordinary Armenians,

Ruben

Primate of the Armenian Church in Britain asked Prime Minister Starmer to help liberate Vardanyan and other ex-leaders of Artsakh.

The Head of the Armenian Diocese of Great Britain and Ireland, Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, along with other religious leaders, appealed to Prime Minister Kier Starmer to call on Baku to immediately release former leaders of Artsakh, who faced violation of all the basic principles of a fair trial.

“Azerbaijan’s continued crackdown on transparency and humanitarian relief has recently seen both the suspension of BBC operations in the country, silencing independent journalism, and the expulsion of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the only organization providing humanitarian aid and the only lifeline to detainees. The detainees are thus completely isolated and grave concerns about their treatment and well-being mount. Signs of their deteriorating health are increasingly evident. Perhaps the most high-profile detainee, former Artsakh State Minister Mr Ruben Vardanyan has for the past two weeks been on a hunger strike in protest”, the letter says.

Signatories called on the British government to unite with other European partners to address this urgent issue through intergovernmental platforms.

Protest rally in Berlin in support of Armenian prisoners

Protesters at the Brandenburg Gate whose action was initiated by the Free Armenian Hostages movement, demanded that the EU leadership urgently counteract human rights violations in Azerbaijan.

Jonathan Spangenberg, President of the Central Council of Armenians of Germany, spoke at the rally. “Those arrested, including Ruben Vardanyan, live in inhumane conditions, there are reports of torture and ill-treatment. Vardanyan is currently on hunger strike and his life is in great danger. We cannot keep silent”, – he said.

Protesters noted that Baku’s actions violate international law, including the UN Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide and the European Convention on Human Rights.

The rally members called on the European Union, Germany and France to impose sanctions against Azerbaijani officials who are guilty of illegal arrests and torture, conduct independent monitoring of prison conditions and demand that Baku urgently release all Armenian political prisoners.

“The world should not turn a blind eye to the crimes of Azerbaijan. The time for words is over. Now we need action”, – said Sarah Reinke, Head of the Human Rights Department of the Society for the Protection of Vulnerable Peoples.

Armenian Churches’ Appeal to Christians Around the World

The united representatives of all Armenian churches worldwide have issued an urgent appeal to Christians around the world, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the Armenian prisoners of war and civilians held in Azerbaijan. The call for the immediate release of all Armenian prisoners of war and detained civilians reflects a deep commitment to Christian values and human dignity, underscoring the urgent need for peace and reconciliation. It highlights the importance of ending violence and inhumane treatment, promoting respect for the inherent dignity of all people, regardless of nationality. The path to lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan can only be realized when humanitarian concerns — such as the return of all prisoners of war and other detained civilians — are addressed. Below is their letter, signed by one hundred clergy members:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We, the united representatives of all Armenian Churches around the world stand together in the most urgent and heartfelt plea for the immediate and unconditional release of all Armenian prisoners of war and detained civilians currently held in Azerbaijan.

This is not just a call for the release of innocent lives; it is a cry for justice, dignity, and the restoration of humanity. These individuals, taken in the course of conflict, have been subjected to unimaginable suffering, and their continued detention is a violation of every principle of human decency and Christian compassion. In the name of our shared faith, we can no longer remain silent. The time for action is now.

The inhumane treatment of these prisoners goes against the very essence of our faith. The violence, the suffering, the torment they endure must end. The world cannot stand by while innocent people are held captive, deprived of their dignity and their basic human rights. The gravity of this situation is of the utmost importance, as the health of Ruben Vardanyan, former Artsakh State Minister, is rapidly deteriorating. Ruben is currently on an ongoing hunger strike in protest of the theatrical “court” proceedings by Azerbaijani authorities. Every single day increasingly critical and accountable.

We cannot and will not accept a future where such inhumanity is allowed to persist. All peoples of the region—whether Armenian, Azerbaijani, or any other deserve peace. Peace built on the foundation of justice. Peace where the dignity of every person is safeguarded, where the chains of suffering are broken, and where every soul is allowed to live in freedom.

We, the Armenian Churches across the world, demand the immediate return of all prisoners of war and detained civilians to their families. This is not merely a humanitarian necessity – it is a moral imperative. The release of Armenian prisoners can be the beginning of a new chapter, one where healing replaces hatred, where understanding overcomes division, and where peace is not just a dream, but a reality.

We urge governments, international organizations and all people of good will to condemn this show trial as political and illegitimate, and to pressure the authorities involved to return these innocent lives to their rightful homes. Do not turn away from the suffering of others. Stand with us. Stand for justice. Stand for peace.

May the light of truth, compassion, and justice guide all of us toward a world where no one is left in chains, where every human life is valued, and where peace is more than just a word – it is a living, breathing reality for all.

In unwavering solidarity and faith,

Ruben Vardanyan's appeal, delivered through his family

Dear compatriots!

Today is March 5th. I want to say a few words to you as Ruben Vardanyan, just as I am: as an Armenian, who speaks and thinks in Russian. As a man of the world, who is happily married, loves everyone, who has dedicated himself to self-education, and who lives with faith in God.

First of all, I want to thank all of you for supporting me through your prayers, thoughts, letters, and simply for not being indifferent to what is happening here. I feel all these thoughts and wishes and they give me great strength and energy. Thoughts are most certainly material. I am in good shape, I feel strong, my health is fine, and I am in complete peace with myself, with my spirit as strong as ever. I want to apologize to my beloved wife, to my family, and to all those dear to me, whom I have caused so much pain and worry with my decision. But each of us has our own unique path, and I have chosen this path for myself. Our fate is predestined by God, but we are the ones who choose the road we take. Even when we refuse to make a choice, then inevitably someone else will make it for us.

I want to emphasize once again that my decision has nothing to do with my personal well-being or my conditions in the detention center, just as it was last time when I went on a hunger strike for 20 days until midnight on April 24. This is a protest – against the very nature of the process itself, against the way this process is unfolding.

I knew what I was getting into, and I was prepared – and am still prepared – for even worse conditions. I am not a victim, and I do not want to be pitied, because all this was a conscious decision.

My demands remain the same. If there is such a desire to judge me – judge me professionally, publicly, openly, in accordance with Azerbaijani laws and all legal procedures, along with everyone else. In the presence of international journalists and observers – after all, you are so sure of your righteousness. Stop artificially separating my case. Why have you singled me out, when all my charges are based on the claim that I have supposedly been part of an organized criminal group since 1987?

Do not violate your own laws and procedures. Do not falsify documents, do not manipulate evidence and protocols. You have everything – my phone and other personal belongings, my documents, they are all fully available to you. Don’t mock the judicial system with this show trial, farce and imitation game. If you are going to judge – then judge fairly.

I want to tell all my compatriots, my beloved ones: it is not just me and 15 others that are being put on trial – it is all Armenians around the world. And if you do not understand this, it is a great tragedy, because this is not the end of the story, not the end of the conflict – only another stage, unfortunately, for all sides.

I am being accused of everything that has happened since 1987. No problem – I am ready to take the heaviest punishment for whatever if only it would bring peace and stability. But it is an illusion to think that after this process is over, you will all be left alone, that you will be able to go about your lives and enjoy simple pleasures without thinking about these problems. The challenges still lie ahead for all of us.

I knew what I was doing when I moved to Artsakh. Every person in life makes decisions for themselves, and in the end they will stand before God alone and answer for their thoughts, their words, and their actions. I know this to be true. Even when someone sacrifices themselves for their homeland, for their family, or for certain principles – it is only their decision and their responsibility to bear. And in that sense, I was fully aware of my choices.

I do not know if I will have another opportunity to speak with you, and so I want to ask for forgiveness from everyone whom I may have ever hurt – through words, actions, or carelessness. Please forgive me! I have never done anything out of malice, envy, pride, or revenge. I never wished to cause anyone pain.

I want to say something separately about one person who is, unfortunately, before whom I feel the greatest sorrow and pain. Dear Alvard, (note: the wife of Davit Manukyan, with whom Ruben left Artsakh in a car) if I had not been in your car, if we had not been together with your husband, Alvard, he would be with you now. Please forgive me. For me, this is the heaviest punishment – that because of me, another person is suffering alongside us.

I also want to apologize separately to all the children who have lost their homeland – that I did not do everything I could, everything I should have, to prevent this. I did as much as I felt I had the moral right to do because I was with you. But I was with you alone, without my family. And yet, I am glad that I was able to prevent certain things that, in my opinion, could have broken us as a nation completely. I managed to stop that and change the course of history a little.

I was happy to be with you, the people of Artsakh, during this difficult time – to always feel your love, warmth, gratitude, and trust. I am proud of you – real, down to earth and my dear people, and I love you all sincerely.

I am a very happy person. God has given me a wonderful family and friends. I was able to bring to life countless projects with unique partners. I have seen so much of the world. But some of the best days of my life were those when, despite all hardships – the blockade, the uncertainty of the future, the difficult conditions – when we rebuilt Akobavank monastery together, broke bread together, and danced our dances.

I am happy that, together with many friends and partners, we were able to carry out dozens of projects in Artsakh. I especially want to thank my Muslim friend (I will not name him, so as not to cause him trouble) for the opportunity to restore the mosque in Shushi together.

Remember: evil must never be answered with evil – for then it only grows and strengthens. And after Sumgait comes Khojaly, and this cycle goes on endlessly. This path was never acceptable to me, because it has no future – it is a dead-end with, unfortunately, no good way out.

I also want to thank many Azerbaijanis whom I have encountered here for staying true to basic human values, even though they see me as an enemy and have their own grievances and mistrust. Despite what they may feel, a lot of them have shown their humanity towards me. And as for those who did not – I genuinely feel sorry for them and forgive them, just as I forgive the Armenians who behave the same way toward me and my family in Armenia.

I am an optimist, and I believe that despite everything, we will overcome all the challenges and difficulties before us. We will once again live in our homeland, in peace with our neighbor, respecting one another and overcome the mutual hate and resentment that has built up over the years – just as some other nations have managed to do.

But if we truly want this, we need a real, stable, long-term peace – not just on a piece of paper, but a peace that is sustainable and is adhered to by all people on a daily basis. We must understand that no one owes us anything. Lasting agreements can only be reached by those who are strong, with a country that has an honorable and dignified elite. True elites are not defined by wealth, connections, power, or even intellect – but by the understanding that those who have been given more in life are held to a higher standard. True elites place their duty to society and responsibility for the future of the nation above all personal interests and desires.

And finally, in memory of all those who have fallen and suffered in this terrible conflict – I deeply believe that some things are more important than the life of a single person. These are faith in goodness, in light, in love, in values, in sacred things – the spiritual foundations that distinguish humans from machines. Without them, the world will once again sink into chaos or perish in a flood or other disasters. One must not become a slave to the golden calf… All of this has already happened in human history. Let us not allow it to happen again and do everything in our power to prevent it, because faith in values is the foundation of our future.

That is why, for the sake of preserving these fundamental values, I am ready to go to the very end, in peace with myself, absolutely happy. Because happiness begins and ends within you, when you are at peace with yourself. You can be happy in a luxurious palace, and you can be happy in the worst prison cell – if you are at peace with yourself.

I am glad that I can serve my people and the principles that I consider to be of greater importance not only for our nation but for all of humanity.

And finally, I want to say that one must never… I realized here that one must never give in to despair or indifference, and I understood why it is the most terrible of the seven sins. I used to think it was pride or envy. But despair means that the divine spark within you has gone out, that you have stopped believing in anything, that you have simply raised your hands and given up.

Never – I urge you… I would like us to never lose faith in everything and never give in to despair. Please! This is the foundation of our future, and that is why I love you all and deeply appreciate the chance that I have been given. I will do everything I can and will continue to do so.

I love you all. I am sure that everything will be alright. I have always been, am, and will be with you. I am a person who wants to live, who wants to love, and who wants to continue his work. But I believe that what I am doing is the right thing, because it is the only way to awaken you from the indifference in which you find yourselves.

[speaks Armenian again] Everything will be alright! !

I love you, respect you, and I am certain that despite all the difficulties ahead, we will persevere.I stand with you as Ruben Vardanyan, son of Karlen, grandson of Hamayak Vardanyan, carrying my entire heritage – the legacy of my parents and my Artsakh grandmother.

I am grateful to you for giving me the joy of being Armenian and loving my homeland.
