Address by the family of Ruben Vardanyan
“The family of Ruben Vardanyan expresses its sincere condolences to Catholics around the world during this week of mourning. Our thoughts are with everyone who has gathered in St. Peter’s Square during these days of sorrow.
We call on the Vatican to honor the legacy of Pope Francis by taking steps to secure the release of the 23 unjustly detained Armenian prisoners, including our father Ruben Vardanyan. To truly uphold Pope Francis’ commitment to justice and human dignity, the Holy See can play a vital role in diplomatic efforts to secure the release of these people. Their imprisonment contradicts the principles of peace and reconciliation that Pope Francis has upheld throughout his papacy.
Pope Francis has said: “Religions cannot be used for war. Only peace is sacred”. We call on the Church to put these words into action by advocating for the immediate and unconditional release of all Armenian prisoners. These Christians deserve protection from persecution. They face hardship because of their faith.
It is time to act.
We ask all people of conscience to join us in this call for justice and freedom for the 23 Armenian prisoners, including Ruben Vardanyan, who remain in captivity solely because of their beliefs and heritage”.
