The defense accused Baku of torturing Ruben Vardanyan and appealed to the UN

Ruben Vardanyan’s lawyers have sent an urgent appeal to the UN special rapporteur with a request to condemn the ill-treatment of their client. As it became known to the social entrepreneur’s family, during the April hunger strike, Ruben Vardanyan was transferred to a punishment cell, he was deprived of sleep, left without drinking water for more than two days and forced to stand on his feet for a long time. In addition, the philanthropist was cut off from all ties with the outside world, prevented from meeting with a lawyer and talking on the phone with relatives.

Thus, Azerbaijan violates its obligations under the Convention against Torture and the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, as the defense statement said.
